Stair railings and guards in Belœil

Handrail, guard, balusters: for Belœil homes we shape interior work in hardwood, in metal or in tempered glass. On an older flight the question is not which model to choose: it is how to reach the height required today without erasing what gives the stairwell its character.

OUR RAILINGS AND GUARDS

Five railing families. One that fits your stairs.

On an older flight the question is not which model to pick. It is how to reach the height required today without erasing what gives the stairwell its character. Here are the five ways to change it, all set out under our railings and guards.

METHOD

How it works, from the site visit to the install

Here the site visit measures how far short the height falls, and finds the sound piece the profile will be copied from.

01
We measure at your place

We take the dimensions from the nose of the tread, regulated height included, and we note what can stay in place. Nothing is drawn before that visit.

02
Drawing and quote

You get a dimensioned drawing and a firm price: infill, handrail, fixings. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

03
Built in our shop

Everything is made in Granby, in our own shop. Count six to eight weeks between the approved drawing and the install. We check the dimensions a second time once the parts are laid out.

04
Installation and finish

Our own crew installs it, in one to three days. No subcontractor: the same people from start to finish.

In Belœil, we raise the guard without changing its design.

It is the request that comes up most often in the older housing here: the moulded handrail and the turned balusters are worth keeping, but the whole assembly sits ten to fifteen centimetres below what is required today. Replacing it with a stock model fixes the height and empties the stairwell of its character in one move. We take the profile off a piece that is still sound, shape it again in the same species, and refit the run on lengthened newels. The height becomes compliant, the design does not change. Our Granby workshop covers the whole of Montérégie.

  • The profile is copied from an original piece still in good condition
  • Missing parts are shaped again in the original species
  • Newels are lengthened or remade when the height falls short

WHAT YOU GET

What is included, and what drives the price

A custom railing comes down to three or four decisions, not more. Here they are, so you know what to expect before you even call us.

Included in every project
  • The site measurement, at your home
  • The dimensioned drawing and your approval
  • Manufacturing in our own shop in Granby
  • Installation and finishing by our own crew
What pushes the price up
  • The total length to cover: flight, landing, upper-floor opening
  • The infill: turned wood, steel balusters, tempered glass
  • The number of sections and corners
  • A curved handrail rather than a straight one
What brings it down
  • Keeping the existing posts and fixings
  • Replacing the handrail only
  • Choosing a standard infill rather than glass
  • Doing the flight and the landing in one visit

QUOTE REQUEST

Tell us the age of the house, not just the height

The current height of the handrail and the approximate period of the house tell us more together than either does on its own. On an older assembly, both the gap to be made up and the way to make it up depend on what the stairwell is already carrying.

A straight-on photograph taken halfway up shows the handrail profile and the baluster spacing in one go. Add one of the base of the starting newel if anything has play in it.

One straight-on view taken halfway up, plus one of the base of the starting newel, is enough for a first opinion.

TURNKEY SERVICE

From the first measurement to the last tread, one team.

We subcontract neither the manufacturing nor the installation. The same team measures, mills and installs — and that is what allows us to correct on site the discrepancies no drawing ever anticipates.

Custom staircase design work at the Escaliers Messier workshop

Design

We measure the opening at your home, set out the rise and run, and settle the wood species and the railing. The project is fixed before a single piece is cut.

Hardwood staircase being built at the Escaliers Messier workshop

Manufacturing

Milled at the workshop, in hardwood. Every staircase is built for its own opening: nothing is assembled in series or pulled from stock.

Installation

Installed by our own team, in one to three days. Adjustments are made on site, against the real opening rather than the drawing.

Restoration

Straight, winder or spiral, classic or modern — measured at your home, milled at the workshop, installed by our team.

PROJECTS

A few of our projects

Assemblies reworked to a profile already in place, shaped at the bench and put back by the people who made them. Every entry gives the infill chosen and the treatment the handrail received.

THE OTHER JOB

And if the flight itself needs rebuilding?

A new handrail on a flight whose treads are hollowing and whose stringer has started to work will underline the wear rather than correct it: at that point the job changes scale.

Frequently asked questions

Can the assembly be raised while keeping the original handrail?
Often, yes. The piece comes off, the newels are extended or remade to the same profile, and the original handrail goes back higher once it has been sanded down. It changes only where its old drillings fall clear of those the new infill calls for.
Can we remake only the spindles that are missing?
That is the usual route. The drawing is lifted from an intact example, then the piece is turned in the timber of the period. On a flight carrying forty of them, remaking six costs a fraction of a full replacement, and nothing shows once the colour is matched.
Does the pitch of the flight complicate manufacturing?
It makes it more precise rather than more complicated. A steep run means taking the height over several steps instead of one, and drawing the handrail on the real pitch. That is measuring time, not workshop time.
How many days is the flight left without a guard?
From one to three days in an ordinary house, depending on the span and how many newels have to be reworked. The bulk is built before the visit; nothing is left on site but setting, adjusting and finishing, and the run stays usable from one day to the next.
Does glass belong in a house on rue Richelieu?
That turns on what you want from the stairwell. It lightens a dark stairwell, but it sits at odds with moulded joinery. The most frequent compromise is to keep the newels and the wooden handrail at the original profile and put glass or black metal only between them.
