Custom staircases in Saint-Amable

In Saint-Amable the median year of construction is 2005, and more than half the properties on the roll date from after 2000. The original staircase is not worn out here: it is a stock flight, put in as fast as the build allowed, in whatever species the developer had settled on. We make its replacement in hardwood, to the dimensions of the opening already framed.

OUR STAIRCASES

Eight staircase families. One that fits your home.

Here, the staircase you already have is still in good shape: the opening meets today’s code and the structure is sound. What dates it is the look — the guard, the wood, the front of the treads. These are the eight models we build in our own shop, each available in a classic or a contemporary style, and all shown under our staircases.

METHOD

How it works, from the site visit to the install

On a staircase under twenty-five years old, the question is not whether it holds. It is how far to take it back — and that is what the site visit settles.

01
We measure at your place

Finished floor to finished floor, the run available on the floor, the width of the opening. Nothing is drawn before that visit.

02
Drawing and quote

You get a dimensioned drawing and a firm price: layout, wood species, stain, railing infill. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

03
Built in our shop

Everything is made in Granby, in our own shop. Count six to eight weeks between the approved drawing and the install. We check the dimensions a second time once the stringers are laid out.

04
Installation and finish

Our own crew installs it, in one to three days. No subcontractor: the same people from start to finish.

In Saint-Amable, we don’t rebuild the staircase. We rebuild what you see.

Houses here are recent: the median build year on the roll is 2005. So your staircase is not worn out — it is simply a builder’s model, put in fast during construction, in whatever species the contractor had on hand. When the stringers and the anchors are sound, we leave the structure where it is and rebuild the treads, the guard and the handrail. You get the effect of a new staircase without the job a new staircase means. We build in Granby and install right across Montérégie.

  • Stringers and anchors stay when they are sound
  • Treads, guard and handrail can each be redone on their own
  • Nearly every shape in our range is still open here

WHAT YOU GET

What is included, and what drives the price

A custom staircase comes down to four or five decisions, not more. Here they are, so you know what to expect before you even call us.

Included in every project
  • The site measurement, at your home
  • The dimensioned drawing and your approval
  • Manufacturing in our own shop in Granby
  • Installation and finishing by our own crew
What pushes the price up
  • The layout: straight, winder, spiral
  • The number of treads and the height to climb
  • The wood species and the stain
  • The railing infill: wood, metal, glass
  • Moving the floor opening
What brings it down
  • Keeping the existing stringers and anchors
  • Reusing the opening exactly as it is
  • Choosing a common wood species
  • Doing the staircase and the railing together

QUOTE REQUEST

The most useful thing is a photo of the stringer from below

In Saint-Amable the year of the house can be read off the roll, and it already tells us how the upper floor was built. What it does not tell us is how the supplied flight was fixed at the top and at the bottom: one photo from underneath settles that in a second.

Add the height measured from one finished floor to the next, and say whether the basement was completed when the house was handed over. We then come out and measure it all on site, bringing the cabinetmaker who does the cutting.

One view of the flight from the bottom, another of the upper landing, and the underside of the stringer if the basement is open.

TURNKEY SERVICE

From the first measurement to the last tread, one team.

We subcontract neither the manufacturing nor the installation. The same team measures, mills and installs — and that is what allows us to correct on site the discrepancies no drawing ever anticipates.

Design

We measure the opening at your home, set out the rise and run, and settle the wood species and the railing. The project is fixed before a single piece is cut.

Manufacturing

Milled at the workshop, in hardwood. Every staircase is built for its own opening: nothing is assembled in series or pulled from stock.

Installation

Installed by our own team, in one to three days. Adjustments are made on site, against the real opening rather than the drawing.

THE OTHER JOB

Is it the railing rather than the stairs?

In stock built after 2000 the flight holds up perfectly well and it is the guard that shows its age: catalogue balusters, posts at an imposed spacing, one drawing repeated down the whole street. It can be replaced on its own, without taking off a single tread. That, by a wide margin, is what people here ask us for.

Frequently asked questions

The original flight is still sound. Does it really need replacing?
Not for its condition. A twenty-year-old flight built to the rules has another thirty years in it. What gets replaced here is a drawing: closed risers, wide stringers, the round handrail that came with the house. If it is the look that bothers you rather than the wear, say so plainly — the job becomes a refit, and nothing about it is urgent.
Can the floor opening stay exactly as it is?
Usually yes. It was sized for a compliant straight flight, and a turning layout fits inside it without rework as long as the floor-to-floor height does not change. Enlarging it is another matter: the floor in these houses sits on trusses that nobody alters without an engineer signing off, and that calculation is not part of what we do.
The basement has been finished since day one. Does that complicate the installation?
It calls mainly for care. A basement finished from the start means a covering laid before anything else, a dropped ceiling in places, and a furnished room at the foot of the flight. We protect the descent, we strip out from the top, and the last riser is worked out on the finish that is there, never on a bare slab.
How many weeks until the staircase is in place?
Six to eight weeks after the drawing is signed. Fabrication takes most of that, and finishing closes it out because it dries at its own pace. Our fitters are then in the house for one to three days, no more. The site measurement happened before the signature and does not count in that figure.
Do you also build staircases in townhouses?
We do. The roll counts one hundred and eleven of them in Saint-Amable, alongside close to six hundred condos, and the flight there is often narrower than in a detached house. Usable width then becomes the dimension that governs everything else, and we take it between the finishes, not between the structures. In a co-ownership the board also has to agree as soon as the flight touches common property.
