Custom staircases in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville

Interior hardwood staircases, made for the bungalows and split-levels of Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville — two housing types the City documents in its own built-heritage record. On a half-level the flight is short, and it is the first thing a visitor sees.

TYPICAL LEAD TIME
OUR STAIRCASES

Eight staircase families. One that fits your home.

On a split-level the flight is short and you see it from the front door: five to seven risers, starting almost inside the entryway. These are the eight models we build in our own shop, each available in a classic or a contemporary style, and all shown under our staircases.

METHOD

How it works, from the site visit to the install

On a flight of five to seven steps everything rides on the site visit: it is what says whether the frame stays.

01
We measure at your place

Finished floor to finished floor, the run available on the floor, the width of the opening. Nothing is drawn before that visit.

02
Drawing and quote

You get a dimensioned drawing and a firm price: layout, wood species, stain, railing infill. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

03
Built in our shop

Everything is made in Granby, in our own shop. Count six to eight weeks between the approved drawing and the install. We check the dimensions a second time once the stringers are laid out.

04
Installation and finish

Our own crew installs it, in one to three days. No subcontractor: the same people from start to finish.

In Saint-Bruno, the staircase is the first thing anyone sees.

Split-levels dominate here, and that changes everything: five to seven risers, a start almost inside the entryway, and a flight every visitor looks at on the way in. The good news is that the frame has rarely moved — stringers from that period are usually still straight. What dates the house is the yellowed varnish, the hollow worn into the treads and the rounded-off nosings. On a flight this short, redoing only what shows transforms the entrance and costs far less than a new flight. The site visit says which of the two jobs you actually need. We cover the whole South Shore from the Granby shop.

  • Treads and risers are renewed on a frame found sound at the visit
  • Nosings are reshaped to give a firm edge underfoot again
  • The whole flight is redrawn if the half-level has been altered since

WHAT YOU GET

What is included, and what drives the price

A custom staircase comes down to four or five decisions, not more. Here they are, so you know what to expect before you even call us.

Included in every project
  • The site measurement, at your home
  • The dimensioned drawing and your approval
  • Manufacturing in our own shop in Granby
  • Installation and finishing by our own crew
What pushes the price up
  • The layout: straight, winder, spiral
  • The number of treads and the height to climb
  • The wood species and the stain
  • The railing infill: wood, metal, glass
  • Moving the floor opening
What brings it down
  • Keeping the existing stringers and anchors
  • Reusing the opening exactly as it is
  • Choosing a common wood species
  • Doing the staircase and the railing together

QUOTE REQUEST

Tell us what sits between your two levels

The height from one floor to the next, the space on the floor in front of the climb, and what the upper room is used for: with those three, we can already place the project. A photograph taken from the foot of the flight fills in the rest.

The site measurement comes next, and the people who take it are the people who will install the staircase. That is when the discrepancies no drawing shows finally surface.

One view of the stairwell from the bottom and one of the upper landing are enough.

TURNKEY SERVICE

From the first measurement to the last tread, one team.

We subcontract neither the manufacturing nor the installation. The same team measures, mills and installs — and that is what allows us to correct on site the discrepancies no drawing ever anticipates.

Custom staircase design work at the Escaliers Messier workshop

Design

We measure the opening at your home, set out the rise and run, and settle the wood species and the railing. The project is fixed before a single piece is cut.

Manufacturing

Milled at the workshop, in hardwood. Every staircase is built for its own opening: nothing is assembled in series or pulled from stock.

Installation

Installed by our own team, in one to three days. Adjustments are made on site, against the real opening rather than the drawing.

THE OTHER JOB

Is it the railing rather than the stairs?

In a half-level house, whatever borders the raised living room almost always sits lower than today’s requirement — and that repair is settled without touching the climb.

Frequently asked questions

How much time should we allow before installation?
The site measurement is taken by appointment, in your home. Manufacturing starts only once the drawing has been approved, and six to eight weeks then pass before installation. The work on site is counted in days: it is the workshop queue that makes the lead time, not the fitting.
Can a split-level flight be redone without touching the landing?
Usually, yes. As long as the half-level has not been altered and headroom is still adequate, treads, risers and nosings are replaced without moving the landing or opening the floor. The site measurement decides, before anyone commits.
Which species suits a house from the 1960s or 1970s?
It is better to take your cue from the original millwork and doors than from the floor, which has often been redone since. Oak and birch cover most situations; maple holds up well where the tone has to stay pale. Samples come with us on site, to be compared in the light of the room.
Is a permit required to replace an interior flight?
Changing a flight inside an opening that already exists does not, in principle, touch the structure. Requirements still differ between municipalities, and the City is what governs before an order is placed.
Do you work on new construction?
Yes, with general contractors and with homeowners alike. Layout gets locked down on the drawings, before finished floors go down, which is what saves you correcting a height at the end of the job. We hand the flooring installer the dimensions they need.
