The oak, the most commonly used wood for stairs
The oak is a dense hardwood with a clearly defined grain. Its pores form visible lines along the entire length of the tread. This open texture makes it recognizable, and explains why it takes the stain deeply rather than on the surface.
Its hardness makes it ideal for frequently used flight of stairs, such as those used as main stairs and climbed several times a day. It is also easier to find than other species in large widths. This is important when cutting treads corners or thick treads in a single room.
