OUR STAIRCASES

Eight staircase families. One that fits your home.

A bungalow with a finished basement has two flights rather than one: the one going up and the one going down. They are seldom dealt with separately. These are the eight models we build in our own shop, each available in a classic or a contemporary style, and all shown under our staircases.

Straight hardwood staircase with a glass guard

Straight staircase

The most common layout. Simple, solid, and the least costly to build.

Winder staircase with radiating treads and a wood guard

Winder staircase

A quarter or a half turn, to save floor space without narrowing the treads.

Spiral staircase turning around a central post

Spiral staircase

When you need a way upstairs and there is very little floor to give.

Classic staircase with turned balusters and closed risers

Classic staircase

Closed risers and turned balusters. The warm, timeless choice.

Modern staircase with taut lines and an exposed stringer

Modern staircase

Exposed stringer and tempered glass. The change people notice first.

First treads of a Butcher Block staircase, hardwood strips glued on edge

Butcher Block

Thick hardwood treads glued on edge. The thickness is the whole point.

Central-stringer staircase in steel with a tempered glass railing

Central stringer

One steel beam down the middle, and treads that look like they float.

Luxury wooden staircase with wrought metalwork

Luxury staircase

Curves and wrought ironwork, for when the stair is the centrepiece.

METHOD

How it works, from the site visit to the install

Two flights in the same house means two sets of measurements and one drawing. It is holding them together that takes the care.

Custom interior staircase and its guard, designed, built and installed by Escaliers Messier

A staircase drawn, built and installed by the same team.

01
We measure at your place

Finished floor to finished floor, the run available on the floor, the width of the opening. Nothing is drawn before that visit.

02
Drawing and quote

You get a dimensioned drawing and a firm price: layout, wood species, stain, railing infill. Nothing is cut until you approve it.

03
Built in our shop

Everything is made in Granby, in our own shop. Count six to eight weeks between the approved drawing and the install. We check the dimensions a second time once the stringers are laid out.

04
Installation and finish

Our own crew installs it, in one to three days. No subcontractor: the same people from start to finish.

custom staircases in Saint-Hubert, made in Montérégie

We manufacture and install interior stairs in hardwood in Saint-Hubert, borough of the city of Longueuil. The measurement is done at your home, the machining and the finishing at our workshop in Montérégie, and the installation is ensured by the same team. Neither the manufacture nor the installation go through a subcontractor, which avoids the referral of responsibility when an adjustment is required on site.

In an established residential area, the demand is very often for the railing rather than the flight itself. railings installed decades ago are often below the height required today, or too spaced between balusters. It is also the post that most transforms the look of a staircase for a relatively short site, making it a good starting point.

  • On-site survey, at the actual cage, before any drawing
  • railing restored to the height and opening standards in force
  • handrail in hardwood machined and sandede by hand
  • Full or partial takeover, depending on the condition of the stringers

A railing is judged by its anchorage, not its filling

Three values are regulated and are not negotiable: the height, measured vertically from the stair nosing and higher at the edge of an landing; the maximum opening of the fill, which sets the number of balusters or the size of the panels; and the resistance to a lateral push. This third one is not seen, and it is it that decides the actual hold.

A post fixed in the flooring rather than in the framework will not hold, no matter what glass or balusterss are placed on it. This is the first thing we check on an existing railing, and it is also what separates a few days’ reset from a site that goes down to the floor structure.

The rest — the essence of the handrail, the section of the balusters, the shade, the way of fixing the glass — is decided after the anchoring has been stopped. It is the opposite order of the one that is spontaneously adopted. Yet it is the only one that avoids drawing a railing that cannot be fixed correctly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What we are asked to do in Saint-Hubert.

Is my railing up to date?

If it is decades old, it probably isn’t. Height and opening requirements have been tightened, which is why a rebuilt railing often appears taller than the one it replaces. This is not a manufacturing error, but an upgrade. railing of stairs.

Can I change the railing without touching the stairs?

Often yes, if the existing anchor points are healthy and well located: the new railing then takes over the same supports, and the construction site counts in days. If the old posts were fixed in the cladding rather than in the framework, the recovery goes down to the structure. renovation of stairs.

Glass, wood or wrought iron, which lasts longer?

All three last for decades when anchored correctly, and it’s the anchoring that decides, not the material. Glass requires more cleaning, wood refines, the wrought iron is retouched locally. The real aging factor is the play that eventually settles on the poles. See our railing and wrought iron.

Do I need a handrail on both sides?

It depends on the width of the flight: the Code sets the threshold above which a second staircase is required. A typical residential staircase requires only one, on the open side, but between two walls, or on a wide flight, the question is worth asking. Handrails.

Do you work elsewhere in Longueuil?

Yes, Saint-Hubert, Greenfield Park and Vieux-Longueuil are all part of the same city, and the process is the same everywhere: survey on site, manufacture in the workshop, and delivery to the customer. stairs in Longueuil.
